The Proposal

Here, yet again, is another romantic comedy following the usual pattern, first there's the hate then there's the love. As per the other movies in the genre what must happen to make the movie enjoyable are the details. It's the details in certain moments that make or break this kind of movie. They must be funny without being cheesy and memorable so that you can share the funny moments with friends without ruining the end.

The Proposal turns out to be a rather decent movie in its genre.

Ryan Reynolds is Andrew, an executive assistant at a book publishing company hoping for his big break to become an editor, his dream job. He therefore must work for Margaret Tate, played by Sandra Bullock, who strikes fear in the heart of everyone in the building. She enters the building and everyone suddenly has too much work to even bother eye contact, let alone offer her a good morning. She is apparently one of the best in the business and runs her office with an iron fist.

By a certain set of circumstances Margaret is being deported back to Canada rather soon and unless she can come up with a solution she'll lose her job. Enter Andrew who she claims has recently asked her to marry him. Later she agrees to promote him to editor if he'll go along with it. This involves a trip to his hometown in Alaska and that's where the bulk of the story comes into its own.

Finally a major movie that doesn't take place in New York or Los Angeles.

So after a surprise announcement to his family Margaret's uncomfortable yet hilarious adventures begin while outside her element of the big city.

Betty White plays Andrew's grandmother and is quite enjoyable in some scenes but falls flat in others.

The rest of the good stuff happens between Andrew and Margaret who do eventually fall in love and yet try to deny it to each other. One such scene is Maragaret trying to locate a towel after a shower (Sandra looks rather good for her age) and runs into Andrew who's about to take a shower (if I had that build I'd parade it around on camera too). The reaction is rather funny but was given away in one of the trailers.

Another scene I thought rather funny because I'm a geek is when Margaret needed the internet and the local internet cafe had computers that ran off of dimes and used an old fashioned dial-up modem of which she had no idea what was going on. Ah, memories.

The movie continues on in a predictable manner and ends much like you would expect if you've seen these type of movies before. But it is a decent movie and makes for a good date movie.
