The Time Traveler's Wife

I can't say I've ever seen a date movie with a science fiction element to it. In a strange way it actually works.

The movie, based on the book, is about a man who unwittingly travels through time at random for unknown reasons. Actually, as the title states, it's about his wife. Who has known him all her life, but he just met her last Tuesday. She knows a great deal about his personality but he hasn't learned of the tattoo on her tush yet.

Seem confusing? Imagine living through it.

Yes, I've read the book. How that came about is because my wife saw the trailer, got the book, read it, loved it, prompted me to read it and then I read it. I like to read and I'll read just about anything.

The book was rather good but I think the author tried too hard trying to come up with a reasonable explanation of what was going on. It would have worked better as a mystery. But this isn't a review of the book, so...

The movie does follow the major plot points of the book which is good and bad. Sometimes they follow the book fairly closely while in other scenes they do a little trimming. In most cases the trimming of the scene worked out fine but often times it gives the movie a jumpy feel to it. As if there were things in between scenes we don't get to see. But the book is long and rather involved as it is heavily character driven so I can see where they had to make some tough choices. It's possible I recognized the jumps because of reading the book.

I can't say if this jumpiness is an issue for people who have not read the book. I would imagine some people are left with the feeling something was missing.

The movie does a good job of exploring the aspects of being someone that travels through time and what that means for you as well as the people around you. You know things of the future that you cannot share, you know things of the past you cannot change no matter how much you want to. It would often be a miserable experience that science fiction does not usually consider. Time travel would not always be the cool thing people may think it is.

Eric Bana was an excellent choice for the role based solely on the description of the character from the book. Acting wise I couldn't say much because I don't think the role was much of a challenge.

I wish Ron Livingston had more screen time but that's just because I like him based on Office Space and Band of Brothers. His character was more involved but I appreciate that they left some that character's storyline out of the movie

Not too many surprises here because if you pay attention they lay out several heavy clues what was going to happen. Clues that were not necessarily in the book so apparently plot revealing clues are required in the movies but not in books.

It's an enjoyable movie but not one I would call an instant classic or anything.
